Telogen Effluvium (Sudden Hair Loss)

Telegen Effluvium

Understanding Telogen Effluvium

Telogen effluvium is a common form of hair loss characterized by excessive shedding of hair from the scalp, resulting in a noticeable decrease in hair density. Unlike male or female pattern baldness, which typically progresses gradually over time, telogen effluvium often occurs suddenly and is usually temporary. While telogen effluvium can be distressing, the condition is generally reversible with proper diagnosis and treatment.

Causes of Telogen Effluvium

Telogen effluvium occurs when a significant number of hair follicles prematurely enter the telogen (resting) phase of the hair growth cycle, leading to increased shedding of hair. Some common causes and triggers of telogen effluvium include:

  • Stress: Physical or emotional stress, such as illness, surgery, childbirth, or a traumatic event, can disrupt the normal hair growth cycle and trigger telogen effluvium.

  • Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations in hormone levels, such as those experienced during pregnancy, menopause, or thyroid disorders, can contribute to telogen effluvium.

  • Nutritional Deficiencies: Inadequate intake of essential nutrients such as iron, protein, vitamins, and minerals can disrupt normal hair growth and contribute to telogen effluvium.

  • Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions such as autoimmune diseases, chronic illnesses, or scalp disorders can disrupt the hair growth cycle and lead to telogen effluvium.

  • Medications: Some medications, including chemotherapy drugs, beta-blockers, retinoids, and anticoagulants, can cause telogen effluvium as a side effect.

Symptoms of Telogen Effluvium

  • Increased Hair Shedding: The primary symptom of telogen effluvium is excessive shedding of hair from the scalp, often noticed during hair washing, brushing, or styling. This shedding may occur suddenly and may last for several weeks to months.

  • Thinning Hair: As hair shedding increases, affected individuals may notice a decrease in hair density and volume, leading to overall thinning of the hair.

  • No Receding Hairline: Unlike male or female pattern baldness, which typically affects specific areas of the scalp, telogen effluvium causes diffuse hair shedding without a receding hairline or specific pattern of hair loss.

  • Scalp Sensitivity: Some individuals with telogen effluvium may experience scalp tenderness or sensitivity, particularly during hair washing or styling.
